Cook’s Inc. in North Wilkesboro opened its doors for business in 1946 (see ad above) during a post-World War II period of tremendous growth in Wilkes County. Originally, Cook’s Inc. was called Carolina Home & Auto Supply, and sold an eclectic mix of goods, including refrigerators and other large appliances, tires, and later on even furniture.
In 1964, James Cook (the son of one of the store’s founders) graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and began working for the family business. Around that time, the Cook family changed their store’s name to Cook’s Inc.
In the late 1960s, Cook’s added sporting goods to its merchandise mix. It proved a wise decision; today, sporting goods is the largest segment of Cook’s business. Through the years, Cook’s has evolved to better serve its customers. The store no longer sells major appliances, tires, or automotive accessories. In 1973, the business relocated to its current 30,000-square-foot building on Willow Lane
Today, Cook’s is a full-line sporting-goods store covering the camping, kayaking, biking, fitness, exercise, men’s and women’s apparel and footwear, and snowboarding categories, just to name a few. Cook’s dedicated staff includes a team of outside sales reps who serve high schools, colleges, travel teams, and recreation departments throughout North Carolina. Cook’s also has an in-house screen-print shop, which can customize T-shirts, sweat shirts, and other spirit-wear apparel. Cook’s impressive team sporting-goods department is one of the area’s largest and most comprehensive.
At Cook’s, customers will find the top brands of sporting goods and athletic equipment at competitive prices, and knowledgeable and friendly customer service. As a member of Nation’s Best Sports (NBS), the largest and most powerful sports buying group in the world, Cook’s Inc. is able to buy the best products at the most competitive prices and pass that selection and savings on to customers. We invite you to visit our store, call us, or schedule a meeting with one of our outside sales reps.
